Abstract: According to the title, the article describes the notion modality in the context of lingual research, especially in linguostylistics. The author’s modality role in the prose creation is highlighted here. Linguostylistic nature of the image city is examined in the author’s modality aspect; also the text verbalization city is founded. The semantic basis of the author’s modality of the image city in Ukrainian prose in end of the XX – beginning of the XXІ century is generated as a subjective, emotional and estimative modality combination. The prose verbalizes abstract notions city and the concrete cities. The author’s modality of city has two levels: nominative and subjective-estimative. The subjective-estimative level contents philosophical, image, mental and other associations. Much attention is given to the author’s modality influence on notions of city usage in Y. Andrukhovych’s, S. Zhadan’s, B. Zholdak’s, I. Karpa’s, L. Kostenko’s, Y. Pashkovkiy’s novels.
